About Us
The Mourning Post is a mother-daughter-led grief initiative that uses the art of handwritten letters to support women navigating life after the death of their mothers.
Our work is rooted in the understanding that the loss of a mother unfolds over a lifetime. Her absence is felt on major life milestones and in the quiet, everyday moments, like hearing her favorite song or instinctively reaching for the phone to call her.
From Me To You
On March 15, 2015, just three days before my 31st birthday, my mother died, and I became a motherless daughter. Four and a half years later to the day, I welcomed my daughter, Hana, and became a motherless mother, too. Although it’s been nearly 11 years since my mother died, it is her love, not her absence, that has continued to shape my life.
One of the greatest gifts my mother gave me was showing me how small gestures can make people feel loved. She turned quiet attentiveness into meaningful action—stocking the pantry with your favorite cereal ahead of a visit, buying supplies for a new hobby you were excited to try, or tucking an article she thought you should read inside a card.
Her love lived in the details, and through them, she taught me how to care for others. Today, I try to carry that same quiet care forward through The Mourning Post.
A lot in my life has changed since 2015, but the one thing that hasn’t is my desire to use my grief for good.
We wish you didn’t have to be here, but we’re glad you found us.
P.S. I am also the creator of The Dead Ringer, a collective grief project on a mission to inspire The Living to stay connected with The Dead—one phone call at a time. When you’re ready, pick up the phone, and pick up where you left off.
From Hana, Too!
I’m six years old, and I am in first grade!
I love reading, cooking and baking, and playing with my stuffies.
I am an artist. I help my mom with The Mourning Post by making decisions about the designs. I also draw all of the pictures for the cards!
I like helping people feel happy in their hearts.
